Dear Dad

by Rachel Hagen on June 22nd, 2010

Dear Dad,

Thanks for being awesome.  You rock.  Remember after my first bath you blow-dried my hair?  I didn’t really know what to think of it…

But now I understand when you blow on my head you’re giving me a cool hair-do.

Hopefully you had a good Father’s Day.  Mom and I worked really hard on the actions to that song.  I think next year I’ll be better.  Thanks for being a great dad.  I’m one lucky little boy.

Love,

Sammy

In honor of Father’s Day we had Mick’s family come out this weekend… never mind the fact that the US Open was going on and the boys had tickets to go see it. :)  This past weekend Sam got to know his Grandma Bella more, I got some much needed sleep, and Mick and his brothers and father got to rub shoulders with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

While Sam didn’t get to attend the tournament THIS year, he still dressed appropriately for the occasion.  Teaching him early.

Our friends watched Pixi while were in the hospital on Sam’s birthday.  Luckily they have an adorable little miniature dachshund that plays really well with Pixi.  I can’t get over this video, and how cute it is!!! Poor Pixi has been a little neglected these past few weeks.  I think she’s due for another play date with her girlfriend Frankie.

Thank you all for your advice and reassurance.  I really do enjoy being a mother and my time with Sam.  I think it was just a rough night.  I just want to clarify Mick does get me flowers for special occasions: Birthday, Anniversary, V-Day.  I just like the “just because” flowers.  Ya know?

It’s a bad sign when my son has cuter shoes than me.

In yesterday’s post I wrote about how we are kinder towards one another.  Then my sister commented, “I’m glad you two are kinder to each other. Sometimes (during colicky times) we are not the nicest to each other, followed shortly by apologies. Talk about stressful.”

Well we experienced a rough night last night.  Really rough.  And lets just say kind words were not exchanged towards one another.  Especially on my end.  It is so stressful when Sam is screaming his lungs out and there is nothing I can do.  I try everything and nothing seems to work.  I feel like a horrible mother.  And quite frankly it’s embarrassing how I let it out on my poor husband.  I wouldn’t take his offer to help…only exhausting myself even more.

Nothing makes me feel better than a clean home.  I woke up this morning, put the sheets in the wash, took Pixi to the groomer, and ran some errands.  Thankfully Sam is exhausted from being up all night and slept well while we’re out.  While in Costco I naturally took advantage of the yummy samples of fruit smoothies, salmon salad, and mango salsa.  While in my feeding frenzy I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw these lovely peonies.

Only eight dollars.  Sold to crazy-hormonal mother with a sample of trail mix in her hand.  So there they sit, on my bedside table bringing much happiness.  No matter how many hints (it’s actually gotten past the point of hint-dropping to “why don’t you ever just buy me flowers?”) I give Mick  I’ve come to realize that if I want fresh, beautiful flowers I need to do it myself.  So there you have it.  Gorgeous eight dollar peonies bought by yours truly.  After a rough night I needed something like this to lift my spirits.

While this afternoon was another rough one for the little guy (Was it something I ate? Something’s got to be in my milk to make him so cranky) the early evening was perfect.  Only thirty minutes of happy little Sambo so I took full advantage and had a nice conversation with him.  I still think he’s a little too young for scolding, but I did ask him nicely to be kinder towards his mom.  And then I realized what his little onesie said:

Yes.  Thank you little Sam.  You made me realize no matter how fussy you can be–making me feel very inadequate as a mother, you still love me.  I know I always will.

Sam

by Rachel Hagen on June 14th, 2010

Well it’s almost been a month now.  Oh how time flies!!!  We’ve been enjoying our time with little Sam.  He is quite the sparty-pants and in his ripe, young age has already taken on many hobbies.  Some of his favorite past-time activities include: pooing, sleeping, hanging out in his swing, listening to his mother sing and play the piano (quite badly, but he’s her number one fan), sucking on his hand, and his favorite: eating.  Heaven help me for when he becomes a teenager and eats us out of our home.  I’m not going to lie; I’ve felt like a cow these past couple days.  According to my resources, he’s going through a growth spurt.  So hopefully these hourly-feedings will calm down.  Although, I will admit I get a little jealous when Mick steps in and helps feed him.

It’s amazing how quickly and real love can be.  While we’ve only had him a month, I wonder what life would be like without him.  Our home has changed for the better.  We’re kinder towards one another, serve each other more, and seem to laugh and find happiness in the simple things.  Sam has been quite the entertainer and has taken on many names.  Many given by his father: Sam & Sammy (obviously), Sambo, Samuri, Sam the Man, Samuelson, Samsonite, Samzinho (Portuguese for “Little Sam”), Wiggles, Peanut, and Monkey.

Thanks to my friend who was in town last week and took these pictures of Sam.  I can’t help but think he looks like a little old man and has a serious case of Benjamin Button.  His furrowed little brow and seriousness are just too dang cute.  One day I’ll get a picture of Sam’s Moro reflex.  With his really long arms he looks like a little gangsta saying “what?” Can you imagine it?  Thanks for letting me gush about our little guy.  We’re quite enamored with him.
